The Francis Ferko 500

I call this race this for a reason. This race came onto the schedule to replace, of all places, Darlington. In the early 90s, the stockholders met and were allegedly promised 2 cup series races a year. from 1997-2002, they only got one, so Ferko filed lawsuit in Federal courts against NASCAR for anti-trust legislation, claiming NASCAR owned certain tracks along with anotehr company that owned tracks, and therefore had the stock car racing market cornered...

So it went down something like this... Rockingham was down to 1 race anyway, Darlington lost labor day to California? and was moved to this weekend, with a night race. For that one year, it was a popular move, fans loved having the race in cooler weather with less chance of rain.

NASCAR settled the suit out of court by selling Rockingham and getting another date for California in February, right after Daytona, and then dropping one of Darlington's races in favor of Texas.

But Ferko got the short end of the proverbial stick. his boss did not appreciate the attention and fired him, and he had to move to Atlnata for a new job. His son ended up commiting suicide, and then Francis Ferko lost the custody battle with his sons widow. And to add more insult to injury, Francis Ferko and his wife divorced after all of that happening ot them.

Francis Ferko attends the races at Texas, but admits he regrets pushing the issue for a 2nd race....

But just think

We could be at Darlington, not another 1.5 miler.... we could be watching racing like this, with beat up race cars like this running for wins...

a track where legends challenged for wins...

The Favorites this Weekend

I have ot think the favorites are the championship contenders... except one, whom I will obviously neglect until ones to watch.

I think Jimmie Johnson and Kasey Kahne, with the Hendrick power and dominance in the last few races have to be favorites this weekend. Reasons are obvious.

Clint Bowyer claims he isn't good at 1.5's, but in the last copule of years, Bowyer has been really solid at Texas, and has been solid in the last few races, so I think he has to be a favorite for this weekend.

Denny Hamlin swept in 2010, but something is just a slight a miss on that team right now.

Greg Biffle, on off years, is good here. Matt Kenseth is good here but just isn't quite in his stride right now. His Kansas win is the only reaosn I list him as a favorite and not a one to watch.

The Ones to Watch

Carl Edwards is my lead man to watch. Good here, even on off years, but this is an even worse than usual off year...

Brad Keselowski has never finished better than 14th here and this is his worst track in the Chase. He said back ni the spring that for whatever reason,n beer cars run abd at Texas... so upt Kevin Harvick in the dud category too.

Jeff Gordon, while he runs good here some years, crashed in his first 3 races at Texas and just took forever to get a grip on this place, not doing it until 2009....

Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman are just searching for something right now and although they mgiht find it, I'm not count on it.

Duds.

THERE IS ONE BIG DUD TO AVOID AT ALL COSTS THIS WEEKEND...

Taht drive is...

drum roll please....

KYLE BUSCH!!!

For two years now, this track has bee nwhere Kyle Busch lost his cool and lost his whole season. Two years ago, this is where he was penalized for flipping off a NASCAR official during the race and last year, the site of his losing his cool in a truck race, resulting in his suspension from copmetition for hte rest of the weekend. Avoid Kyle Busch at all costs. He isn't that good at Texas anyway.

My Picks

1) Jimmie Johnson
2) Clint Bowyer
3) Greg Biffle

I finally got a rundown together. Trying to get all my Martinsville stuff together took time away from my rundown. Plus, my roommate from college was stuck dwon here since all the bridge to the eastern shore and all the roads between here and there were flooded until about mid day today. He's safe and sound at home now.
