A Thank You Note

I would like to extend my own personal gratitude to Carl and Jerry (carlm54stl and 77GP) for covering me on my vacation. I'm glad there were those able to cover me in my absence. I'm back for now and what better place to come back then at Daytona?

Points and Congratulatory Remarks

Congrats to Hunter (silverfish33) for winning at Kentucky! This is his second win of 2013 after taking the win at Auto Club Speedway.

Also, I still hold on to the overall and the Segment Points. This race is important because the Segment 2 points end today. Daytona has been known to shake out this Segment poitns at the end. Last year, I prematurely named Keane (Leprechaun) the Segment 2 winner, but after some points were realigned by NASCAR, I had to realign the points and ended up switching the win to Carl (carlm54stl)... and that was a tough announcement to make, believe me.

As is stands now, the points look like this:

This Week at Daytona

It's another crap shot race. The smaller teams sometimes make a poker style "all in" move at these tracks, and every once in a blue moon they run really well. David Ragan or AJ Allmendinger could win this race just as well as Matt Kenseth or Jimmie Johnson.

So to win the race, teh segment, or take a points lead, you need the right combination of speed, racing luck, and maybe a little help from NASCAR calling a penalty your way.

You can take various strategies. You can pick the best restricter plate racers, you can pick the lucky drivers, you can pick the guy who hasn't finished better than 20th all year... . and you could still win!

There are drivers with a lucky streak a mile wide, and drivers who seem to be snake bitten at these types of races. Sometimes, snake bit drivers avoid the bite for once though. Read on to find out who....

Luck up to this point is irrelevant. It's just a big time crap shot.

So lets get down to it...

FORD TEAMS

I usually don't start with Ford, but I have a reason this week. Ford has actually won this July Daytona race more than any other make... that is, if you combine all wins with Mercury in that bucket. Ford has 1 more win than GM in this event.

Penske

Brad Keselowski seems to have drank all the beer out of his lucky glass. He hasn't run well lately, but what about his luck? Will it matter? Plus, he seems to be better at Talladega than Daytona

Joey Logano is an underrated restricter plate racer. In the two car tango days, he ran well with Kyle Busch and always seem to get overshadowed working with his teammates. He is good in the Nationwide... maybe its time that luck came through here.

Roush Fenway Racing

Greg Biffle got his first win in NASCAR here by outlasting Bobby Labonte in a fuel mileage race. Since then, he has often been overshadowed by Matt Kenseth at Roush with his restricter plate prowess last year. Biffle didn't really get teh chance to stand on his own last year and really get a swing at a win in one of these because he was always the guy getting the punt as someone tried to catch the 17.

Carl Edwards always seems to get some of his better restricter plate finishes at this particular night race in Daytona too.

Ricky is too young to gauge just yet.

Wood Bros

People are tempted to swing for Trevor Bayne... but his win in the 500 is his only top 10 at Daytona. He has a couple of top 10's at Talladega but not at Daytona since then.... he was good in the two car tango days because he was willing to push everyone else around and it worked out for him one time.

Petty

These guys are just as good of a bet as anyone.

CHEVROLET TEAMS
For a while, I said the only teams worth picking where Chevrolets. For a few weeks that hasn't been the case.

Stewart Haas

Tony Stewart has 4 wins at this type of track and seems to be the man in the July race, but never in the 500. One cna only wonder if Stewart will make it number 5.

Danica might run alright, but you have to think the rest of the field will have caught on to the program by now.

Ryan Newman is one of your "snake bit" drivers... he won the Daytona 500 in 2008, but he has been upside down here and Talladega several times and just seems to find the trouble no matter what.

Hendrick Motorsports

Jimmie Johnson is another guy who is feast and famine at these tracks. This year, its feast, with a win and a top 10, but the July Daytona race is a mystery to him. He might win, he might crash. If there is trouble, he seems to find it.

Jeff Gordon seems to have run out of luck around here too.

For some reason, Kasey can't get it together. He hasn't finisehd either plate race this year.

Dale jr.... I tell you guys this everytime, but half the people still pick him. So let me put it in bold letters and maybe someone will read it. DALE EARNHARDT JR HAS NOT WON A RESTRICTER PLATE POINTS PAYING RACE SINCE GEORGE BUSH WAS RUNNING FOR RE-ELECTION!!!! For those of you not politically inclined, that's 2004... the infamous incidnet where NASCAR took 25 points for him for syaing "That win don't mean ****, daddy won 8 times here." Yeap, that's the last time he won.

Has he scored top 5's? Sure. Could he win this week? Sure. Will he get you a lot of points anyway, despite not winning? Maybe.

But I'm just saying.... I think the game has passed him a little bit from the old DEI days when he ran with Waltrip....

Richard Childress Racing

Harvick was always good at making the timing right, but he hasn't finished a restricter plate race this year either. The closer needs a good race to close on too, but will it be this week?

Burton and Menard sneak out of these things sometimes with good finishes too.

Earnahrdt Gannassi

As good as Jamie McMurray is at this stuff (winning 3 of these things for Roush), I expected more from the team at Talladega considering they get their stuff from Hendrick. I picked Jamie and it hurt me a little at Talladega. Plus, Montoya just can't get it together for a whole race and being night time, he might not see the jet dryer... (those jokes never get old).

TOYOTA TEAMS

Toyota is getting some of that rhytym back, but do you trust them? They lost like 5 engines here in February.

Joe Gibbs

Gibbs ace in the hole is Matt Kenseth. The guy, whether he admits it or not, just "gets" restricter plate racing right now. While that means he will probably lead lots of laps and do well, it could also mean that since he won 2 races last year, blew up while leading the 500, and dominated Talladega, that absolutely no one will want to work wtih him at the ned out of fear of not being able to pass him. It could mean he gets to the front and wins. Being a Toyota, it could mean those reliability issues that seem to come and go could come to haunt him.

Kyle Busch is alright at this stuff, and Denny Hamlin never could seem to get a plate win. The dude discovered two car drafting but could never capitalize on it.

Micheal Waltrip Racing

Bowyer is really good at this palte racing, but seems to always do better at Talladega vs Daytona. He is a good pick, none the less. Micheal Waltrip might run the race, hard to say.... he seems to be too far out of racing shape to be focused at the end though.

My Picks

Lets try....

1) Kurt Busch
2) Jeffrey Michael Gordon
3) Pony Stew-farts, aka Tony Stewart

1) Ryan Newman
2) Tony Stewart
3) Martin Truex Jr.

Mark Martin will be literally pushing Truex into the top 5..... thats my guess anyways!

Dave.....

Mark Martin won't be in this race to push Truex so you may want to reconsider.

Ok... Mark Martin won't be pushing Truex around the track... I will stay with Truex. Hopefully Waltrip wrecks behind Truex and not in front of Truex

I'm going through my old Route 66 vacation pictures and adding commentary to them. I'll post a couple of my favorite pictures through here as I go.

This is a famous mural in Pontiac, IL on Route 66. The bricks were taken out of a road near there in 2008 when they concrete and asphault were busted up, and the brick was discovered underneath. They were moved here for Route 66 travelers to enjoy. This is a world famous mural for Route 66 travelers.

And here is the Torino venturing out onto an old condmened section of Route 66. The state apparently decided it was easier to just build a new road than to fix the current one.

And before hitting Route 66, the Torino found and old Ford plant with a Ford water tower and all...

If you want to see the whole album with commentary, you shoudl be able to pull up the pictures and view them herE:
