I was looking forward to coming to Bristol to try the new surface because I didn't have the chance to run here at all since they repaved.

I have talked to a couple of guys who have been here since, and all of the reviews have been good. Bristol can be a hard place to pass, so I think the hope is that you'll see more two-wide racing with cars able to move up to a second groove.

Of all the tracks we visit, I probably have the most experience at Bristol based on running both Busch and Cup. Plus, you are running a lot of laps at places like Bristol and Martinsville, and that helps you get comfortable.

After driving it in the first practice, I can say this feels like a completely different racetrack. I started out so loose, and I think it comes down to the load forces on the new banking. I was loose in and loose off, so we had to go right to work. The transitions are much different.

With more laps I felt the track really come around for me. It's going to change the way I race, but it should be better. We didn't run too much in race trim before we transitioned over to qualifying trim.

The banking reminds me of Homestead in that it's like a bowl and that should allow us to move around a bit more and find a line that works. I am really happy with the No. 11 FedEx Chevy that the guys built.

It's great for this team to lock in a place in the Chase for the second year in a row. I think a lot of people looked at last year as a bit of a fluke and weren't sure if we would be able to run as well.

We knew we weren't going to be able to sneak up on anyone, but we are happy to fly under the radar a bit. We've pretty quietly put together another good season and we aren't surprised.

Leaving Homestead last season, we talked and we thought we could improve in a lot of areas, and we have. We are a better team this year and I know I have learned to be a better driver than I was a year ago.

We want to beat our third-place finish and hopefully run for a championship.

Denny Hamlin drives the No. 11 FedEx Chevrolet. He will share his weekly thoughts on and off the track with ESPN.com readers with the help of writer David Newton.

Bush, Truex, or Harvick would need to total and Jr would need to take the checkered flag to get back in the Chase.

With California being the next race he technically would have a shot at it because I think he does well there and Truex or Harvick would be more likely to have issues there they he does, but you never know.

I think he needs to have a team mate total one of themto sneak him in. :) J/K
