If you could look inside the trunk from the back seat? to see what is going on that might help? I have an attachment from the replacement or repair from the Haines repair manual.
So either the latch is loose and when you shut it it no longer engages?
also if the latch has a spring on it and it broke it maybe locked in the closed position and then every time you shut it, it will will not latch.
Or there is something on the latch that has broken off.
I will take a look at mine and see if there is anything that I could see that may cause the problem mine is a 99 Monte, I have it in a storage Garage I will try to get there later today.
Does the Car have a Remote that opens the trunk? Or a yellow button on the dash below the steering wheel that opens it?

Okay here is a few photo's of mine. the latch is remote operated with the factory remote unit. Here you will find the Inside left and inside right of the latch and also the last shot is the latch looking at it. If you check the one in your car and something is missing it could be broken or that something is in the wrong position. There could be a spring inside some place that is broken and not in plain sight?
