Temp Gauge Issue

Hello everybody, I am a new member on this forum, but I have visited this forum whenever I've had issues with my monte. I drive a 2004 Monte Carlo SS with a little over 100000 miles on it, and for the past month or two my temp gauge has been acting up. When I turn off the car after it warms up, the temp gauge will remain at the temperature it was when the car turned off. The next time I start the car the temp gauge will act normally, but instead of starting from 0 it starts from the last temp the car was before I shut it off. Now, my gauge is off the charts even on cold starts. Sometimes it steps back down, but it still acts up. The rest of my gauges appear perfectly fine, and my car doesn't seem to run any differently.

I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, or if anyone knows what could be the cause. I thought it could be the stepper motor but figured I'd ask for a second opinion before I go ripping apart my dash. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

I would guess stepper motor but make sure your temp gauge is good before you tear into your dash.

Sounds very much like the stepper motor.

Welcome to the site. I would replace them all if you gonna take it apart. Then you'll know it will be all set.
