speedometer

i have an 05 monte carlo ls. its got 51000 miles on it and bout 5000 miles ago the speedometer went out. now the problem with this is that the needle is buried. when i slow down the needle will come back down to like 70 or 80 and than it will go back up. now mine governs at either 105 or 110 i can't remember cuz i only had it that fast once. i've never burried the needle idk whats goin on with it at all. i took it to the shop and they told me i needed a new cluster. when i found one on ebay and called bout it they told me i can't use a used one i have to buy a new one. i guess my question is is there anything that i can do myself to test this and c if there is any other possibilities that it may be. anything would be helpful. anything at all. thank u

Hi Loren, & Welcome to the MCF,
Sorry to read that you are having problems with your
Monte Carlo. I've researched your problem and
found that several GM vehicles have had speedometer problem.
One suggestion was to disconnect the negative battery post
to reset your system. It should go back to zero.
Others had to replace the motors in the guage cluster w. It's $400+ at dealer to unplug, replace and re-plug.
Please be patience, and I'm sure that other MCF Member's
will post their thoughts/experience with your problem.
Good Luck, `Space

I found a guy on ebay that repairs your cluster for 100 smackers plus shipping. If you dont mind doing the work yourself....

RE: speedometer

Another option it to turn the car off and the to accessory. The speedometer will try to zero itself abit and bring it down about 5mph. Sounds like you will need to do this about 15 times or so, but it should zero out again.

Mine does it every so often, I zero it and it works fine.

I have heard of one instance where this simply killed the speedo but the other gauges worked.
