Part of my Resonator has fallen off!

2004 Monte Carlo SS 3.8l

So I was putting on my pretty new exhaust tips I just got today and I needed to use a bit of force to work them on the exhaust. (Flowmaster 2.5" inlet 4" outlet) Then Something fell off my car from the underside.

Knowing that this probably isn't a good thing I investigate to find this laying under the car.

(Edit: I found the picture I was looking for and now know it is a resonator but still not sure about the droning sound or how to go about fixing this.)

I am assuming it is a part of the exhaust system but I was having trouble finding a picture of the exhaust that sows this part. As you can see this thing is quite rusty and has massive holes where I am assuming bolts used to go.So could someone help me out. What is this and how should I go about solving my dilemma?

Also my dad has been complaining about how the car drones quite loudly when I am idle and at low RPMs could this have been the culprit?
Now that I have found what it is anyone know of a good replacement I could order? I am guessing these affect the sound the car makes some what but any advice is welcome.

Thanks!

That is just a heat shield normally mounted to the body. It is not really important at all, so don't stress. Heat shields are more of a PITA than anything else. They rattle. Although I'd want to make sure the heat shield around the gas tank is intact. That doesn't look like it.

That is actually the heat shield to the resonator (which I believe is spot welded to the res). The res probably has a hole along the seam where it's crimped together.

I went through 2 aftermarket replacement resonators in less then 10,000 miles. My opinion, delete it. Replace it with a straight piece of pipe. I had a shop replace mine with a piece of straight pipe and never looked back.
