Smell of Gas when I Drive...
1987 Monte Carlo.
My car smells of gas when I drive. it's so bad that I think it's making me sick because my breathing gets weird. I also have to tap on the acceleration pedal when i start the car so I'm thinking the fuel pump is bad?? Whatever this is...I need to know. |
Why would a car smell like gas while its running
^ Click above link Check back to see what other member's post on your problem. Have you opened you hood & checked for leaks ? Do you have a carb or FI ? Have you looked under your Monte for signs of leaking ? Good Luck > Don't Smoke anything... |
Hello O'Neil,
If I combine your 2 symptoms, I would say you have a crack I the fuel line or return. I would say it could Also be a leak in your FPR But it is small and evaporating before it hits your motor. When I have had that smell it was usually After a fill up and either the gas station attendant didn't put the cap back on right or the cap itself was faulty. But I did not loose fuel pressure. So when you are driving is the engine power normal or does it seem to be somewhat less responsive? Give a little more detail and check back After to see what other members may think! |
Had the same problem on my '01 S/S. Found a small crack in the plastic line going into the fuel rail. The hard plastic fuel line can be spliced/replaced but it's a royal pain because its so stiff. I ended up using a high pressure rubber line and special clamps for fuel injection. Works like a champ...

Do u have a sub system in your trunk? I ran into this same problem with a previous car of mine when the shop that installed my system put the self tapping screw thru my trunk for the ground they hit my return line I think it was or another line I can't remember so that could be a possibility. Needless to say I took it back and got mine fixed at their expense :)

Definitely have your car checked for leaks. Fuel leaks are very dangerous...like driving a bomb just waiting to go off.
If no leaks are found you may need to replace the charcoal canister. Sometimes people will overfill their tanks (continue to pump gas after the pump clicks off). When this is done fuel can flow into the canister. Once the canister has fuel in it you will smell fuel in the passenger compartment all the time. The only way to get rid of the fuel smell is to replace the canister. |
That's some good info 03ssle I never knew that I always go after it clicks I guess I'll quit doing that :)
