Shifter knob no quick release clip

Hi I am new here but have owned several Montes over the years
My problem is removing the shifter knob off an 82 monte .I've have removed several and it's been easy
.just buy removing the clip etc. My shifter doesn't have a clip.Has anyone else run into this .what do I do
