reverse

I drive a 1999 3.1 monte carlo and when I put my car in reverse and back up my car squeaks really loud why would it do that?

Is your parking brake (ebrake) broken and draging? Not really sure what else it could be...that or your rear brake pads are on their way out, and your hearing it only in reverse because your usually going much slower in reverse...

yea i hear it in reverse but when i stop and turn my car off i can rock the car and hear the same noise and it sounds like it is coming from the front passenger tire

And your sure that all your brakes are healthy? Its sounds to me like your pads are close to wearing out, and maybe your touching on a wear indicator slightly. Or that your ebrake is dragging ever so slightly. But since you say it sounds to be coming from the front, I say maybe your front pads are wearing out. It is not uncommon for one pad to just start to touch the wear indicator before the other sides pad does. It is weird though that you only hear the noise in reverse. MAYBE a wheel bearing? Its does not sound like it is a mechanical problem with the engine or tranny if you can duplicate the sound even with the car turned off, and just rocking it.

I'm a little stuck on the fact that it ony does it in reverse...my only thoughts on that is like I said before, maybe because you typically drive really slow in reverse. Or its possible that if its your brake pads wearing out, the wear indicator is just barley making contact with the rotor, and due to the way it worn your only getting the noise in reverse for now...

I am honestly at a bit of a loss as to why its only doing it in reverse, although, I have had brake pads squeak in reverse only before. I would at least check out your brake all around the car and make sure its not just time for a brake job.

How's your tranny fluid?

gohawk72 10-14-2009 07:37 AM

no clue never check that what would that have to do with anything?

MAMONTE 10-14-2009 08:04 AM

Well, you say that is makes the noise in reverse...It does not sound like the noise you are talking about is coming from your transmission, from what you have explained to me, it sounds like a metallic "clicking" noise coming from your passenger side fron wheel, but he is just trying to eliminate all the simple possibilities. It never hurts to check your tranny fluid once in a while, just to make sure you don't have a leak in the tranny.

Aside from the suggestions I gave you in the PM's, I am out of idea as to what it could be. I think your really going to need to take it in to be checked out.

If your fluid isn't pink and clean, it could be contaminated and effecting things inside your transmission. This small squeal now could be a problem waiting to arise and poor fluid will only make things worse.

Whenever you have an issue with a part the first thing you want to do is check fluids. They make everything that moves, move properly.
