Hi, No Name ,or Location in your Profile. How many miles are on your Monte Carlo ? Have you ever flushed your system ? How has your Monte been maintained ? Are you still under warranty ? It could be a thermostat, or faulty sensor. Is you cooling fan kick'in on when you are @ idle ? Have you checked for leaks in engine compartment, and under engine ? It is difficult to answer your ?'s , by just your words ? How high is the temp gauge reading when it overheats ? Is it throwing any codes ? Some 3.4L have Overheating Prob's Check Manifold Gasket 4 leaks. Look 4-ward 2 additional information on your problem. Good Luck |
Perhaps your thermostat is stuck closed, or you have a little bit of air in your system.
Try to change the thermostat + bleed the system and see if that clears it up before diagnosing anything else. (doing that will cost about $10) |
sorry i there is 51,000mi and i have never flushed the radiator or changed the thermostat...ive maintained it pretty good with the oil changes...i did have a leak in the gasket before i remember i toook it to the dealer and they replaced a seal...there is no engine light coming on just the hot coolant temp and if im idle for long it goes to 260! Yes the fans kick on when im idling...im not leaking anything under the car

Also the car is not under warranty anymore and i recently had the oil pressure checked and everything was okay

It does sound like a faulty thermostat, and your rad should be changed `if it has not been. Good Luck, & let us know the results. Thanks |
this sounds to me like your cooling fans arent coming on at idle. youd should check that first. a stuck thermostat will cause your car to overheat all the time not only at idle. but your cooling fans not coming on will cause you to overheat at idle and not a cruise. this is because there is air flow while driving and not while stationary. I would check those first popo the hood and let your car idle see if they come on at all. also make sure that your coolant is full like it should be. good luck.

It turned out to be an easy fix i had air in the radiator... i just blead it from the bleeder valve and its been running fine no overheating

glad we could help :)
Now if you keep getting air in your system, there could be a bigger problem, so keep an eye on it. |
I have a 2005 3.4 monte carlo is overheating at idle. It has never been passed the halfway mark until now. replaced t-stat, replalaced lower manifold gasgets, replaced water pump..still passes half way mark and then fans come on sound like their low. if someone could steer me in the right direction. i dont know how to bleed the radiator.
