Oil Smell
 

So I have been running no cat and a tune for a while now, and I am accustomed to the smell of the exhaust, but lately it has been smelling more oily.

I've noticed it mostly right at start-up, and occasionally while waiting at a light. Engine runs strong, no drips or leaks that I can see, just smells funny.

Anyone have an idea as to the cause?

If you're smelling burnt oil then there has to be a leak somewhere. The way the exhaust is layed out on these engines I'd take a close look at the exhaust manifolds right below the edge of the valve covers for discoloration. Also run your finger along the underside of the valve cover edge to check for oil. A light and an inspection mirror will help to see the rear manifold better.

x2 on the valve covers. Usually if you smell it, it is burning and that is a very typical spot for a drip or 2.

Just keep an eye on your oil levels also.

Thanks guys, I will take a look at that when I get off work tonight. Replacement looks pretty easy.

An update, I did get in and look around, no obvious oil, but a good amount of grime along the joint between the valve cover and the block. Wiped it down really well and waited a few days to check again. Still nothing leaking back there or in the front.

Any other locations to check? I'd hate for it to be seeping around the rings.

The symptoms that you have described could indicate an internal engine issue. Do you see any blue smoke out the tailpipe? The only way to determine the condition of the rings and valves is old school mechanics. You will need to perform a compression test and a cylinder leak down test. Gregg
