Need to change oil pan , What else while doing this ?
HI all , Been a while . 2000 Monte SS
So my leak is gotten pretty bad from the oil pan , its got a dent , must of been dropped at some point by a careless mechanic (just about worse then doctors) Anyway I got a brand new Dorman oil pan and the fel-pro gasket , I'm also going to replace my transmission pan and filter ,gasket . I have what seems to be a major leak from the power steering pump , Its gets low and the car runs quite bad like the fuel filter is clogged which I'm sure it is , rusted lines but ain't touching that for now that's $$$$ . Every time i fill the power steering car runs great ....really bizarre. Is it logical to change the PS pump while they change the oil pan ? Going to be roughly $1k for the oil pan /trans pan with labor . What else should, I be aware of , do or not do ? Thank you all . |
If you do a new trans pan, get one with a drain plug. I think the Dorman replacement has one. Makes oil changes 1000x less messy and keeps the gasket intact.

Thank you , If the power steering is indeed leaking bad enough , Is this a good time to replace it while they doing the oil pan and trans pan ?
I originally had a issue with it like 10 years ago , The shop claimed they put a new one in and was not working properly and ended up using a used pump . Guess its been leaking for 10 years and my steering has never been the same since . I have just had bad luck my entire life with cars . I dread repairs worse then the dentist drill . How complex is changing the fuel lines , there extremely rusted . reasonable labor cost when installing this ? I would not be able to do any of this work . So its pay big at the smaller shops that allow me to bring my own parts . or pay triple at a Goodyear etc.... I'm hoping all this pans and lines , pump maybe $2k , This would be the last time , after this Its junk yard heaven . last and I forgot to ask this , What makes the car shake when breaking at high speeds 70mph and up ? My brakes were checked and they said they looked fine , But I think my front pads and rotors maybe be bad . I did replace the rears 2 years ago . |
