Monte Carlo Issues

my wife has a 2002 monte carlo SS with a 3.8 V-6. while accelerating between 40-60 it jerks like i am lettin on and off the throttle a little. its not a rough jerking by no means. just enough to be aggrivating. i have put new plugs, wires, air and fuel filters on it. does anyone know about what could be causin this? there is not any codes on a diagnostics computer. the fuel guage is floatin pretty bad too. would this be connected or 2 seperat problems?

It could be a plugged catalytic converter. I don't know why it wouldn't throw a code tho.

Just would like to say welcome to the Forum!

Not sure what would cause that... anyways welcome to the forum, hope you get it figured out. I find it strange that it's not throwing any codes

Like Lou said, could be a clogged cat '00-'01's had a recall for the cats since GM got a bad batch (if yours was a 2002 assembled in late 2001 it's possible you got a bad one). Or it could just be plugged from age. Easy check, run the car for about 15 minutes (until it reaches closed loop) then look under the car and see if the cat is a cherry red (possibly with a faint glow) then it's plugged.

Probably a bad stepper motor - easiest way to fix that, remove the whole cluster and ship it to BB Engineer to have new motors put in (the factory ones are prone to fail).

alrighty, thanks for the suggestions, i'll check it out and see. i did notice it has an exhaust leak about the middle of the car. forgot to mention that earlier. i'll check all that out. a clogged cat could possibly cause it to leak couldn't it?

The jerking sounds like a transmission problem, a lot of time tranny codes don't set off a SES light

Could be the torque converter going bad too

Check your transmission fluid

Might be a bad crankshaft position sensor. 3800 II's are prone for those going out.

Not saying this is the problem. But I had a 2 yrs old car that did the samething. I poured in some injector cleaner and took it down the freeway. Man I hit the nail on the head . On the way back from a 15 mile ride. I felt the difference right a way. So once a yr I put in a can of injector cleaner. Cheap fix if thats the problem. Hope its something easy & Cheap for you
