Looking for decent sending unit/fuel pump less than AC Delco one...
 

Has anyone used the Dorman fuel sending unit/fuel pump shown here?

Not sure how the quality is with these since Dorman is usually hit or miss, especially with rebuilt stuff but these appear to be brand new. Generic type thing since the plug is different than stock, but not sure if it will last. price with fuel pump is 1/3 the price of AC Delco unit WITHOUT fuel pump. But if my sending unit turns out to be bad I plan on changing sending unit and pump at once since I have 112,000 miles and believe it is the original sending unit/pump in the tank.

The shop I have been going to for over 15 years does not like Dorman, says he see's way to many people coming back. He says typically heat kills them as they need fuel to keep cooled and a lot of people ride around on E. He wants to only put in OEM, but will put in anything I bring him.

Hi Zippy, I can see why the shop mechanic likes that, the AC Delco part is always better than a low dollar replacement but since the new GM one is over $500 for sending unit and fuel pump (can be found as low as $300 online) and the Dorman one is 1/3 the price. So I would be crazy to expect the quality to be the same as OEM, but I'm wondering if anyone has used this part and if it will work well for another 5 years or so... And I have never run the car out of gas, even without a working gas gauge I watch my trip odometer and have calculated how many miles I can go on a tank of gas.

Well I guess no one else around ever had to replace their fuel pump, but I found the correct AC Delco one for around $189 so went with that. don't want to guess on the quality of a dorman one and by getting the correct GM one I don't have to cut my wiring harness and attach a different plug to fit the generic fuel pump.

Hate to tell you, but GM had a problem with the original design of the fuel pump electrical connectors. So all new ones, even GM/ACDelco ones have a different connector that needs to be cut in.

What was the problem? I just installed my new one yesterday and used the original connector. It is working properly now, my sending unit is working so my gas guage is no longer full all of the time, and the pump seems to be working properly as well.

Glad to hear you were able to resolve your problem. After further research I've come to the conclusion the information I got regarding the harness connector is a scam by Airtex fuel pumps, claiming their aftermarket connector is an "upgrade" over OEM, and replacing the harness connector covers the possibility of the connector being the problem. It seems they want you to believe theirs are better, but in reality they just want to standardize their connector to minimize production costs. Good to know. Well since all is working well now I'm sure I won't be pulling the new pump out again to replace the wires. I looked over the old one well before reinstalling and could not find any cracks in the plug or worn insulation so I should be good.

I am getting engine warning and the OBD code(p0463)the fuel pump level sensor, after some research it seems like all replacement fuel pumps have the modified level sending unit connector; even the acdelco mu 1743. I am going to unplug the connector,inspect and CRC clean it, put a little dialectic grease on it to see it fixes the fuel gauge problem. I am hoping it does, don't want to replace the fuel pump.I guess people are not complaining about the faulty sending unit connector, requesting a recall. I am not certain it is the level sensor but the connector, the repair level sensor kit is over $115; cheaper to buy the fuel pump? I will check it out and get back to the forum.

i have replace my pump last year i believe adn i used a delphi i will say it works good but ever since then i havent been getting quite the same fuel milage im guessing cause the sending unit on my old one reached further down in the tank idk my guess i made a video in case you need it
