question about check engine light
so my check engine light came on the other day. i'm thinking it may be an evap code because i don't think i clicked my gas cap enough times after filling up. my first question is, will the light go off after a little while, or should i get it cleared?
my next question: i've been told i can just disconnect the battery to clear the code. will this cause any problems? i don't really want to do this and will probably be my last resort since i would like to see what the code actually is.
lastly, i have heard but was not sure about parts stores like advance auto parts having scan tools and scanning your vehicle for little or no charge. is this true? otherwise, where could i go to pull the code for little or nothing, cuz i know the dealer will probably charge too much.
thanks for any info you all may have.

Shouldn't cost you anything and then you will know what is causing the code. If it is a gas cap issue, remove, and tighten again, remove negative battery cable, reattach after 15 minutes and it'll clear the code. If it comes back, you'll know it is something else.

thanks for the replies guys. this morning when leaving for work, the light did not come on so i'm thinking it had to be some sort of evap code that goes away after so many key starts after not seeing the problem any more. i guess i learned something this week! thanks again.

My dad has a 2006 SS, and he noticed that every now and then the light would come on because of the gas cap. He had to get some work done, I don't recall what but they said it was a common problem and they knew how to fix it. I think it cost him like $75 but he no longer has the lights.
(It would happen maybe once or twice a month)
