Heated seat fix.

Default Heated seat fix.

I just finished fixing my heated seat in the 04 Monte. It took about an hour, but that included chasing after things like, tools and wire. I'll go through what I did and post some pics in the order of repair.

I first undid the top seat cover of the drivers seat. This was done by putting the seat all the way forward then tilting it forward to access the bottom. There is a full length double hooked plastic retainer that needs to be released. This is where I had to go get my reading glasses and the trouble light (the chasing after things).

After unhooking the front and back of the seat cover, move the seat back, and put it at full back tilt. You can then lift the seat cover up enough to see the main wiring coming up by your left butt cheek. This is the common place for them to beak.

When you pull the cover up a bit, you will notice a small burn spot, this will be where the broken wire is.

I then located the broken ends. One end is a plastic coated wire, while the other is a bare wire.

I had to cut back the bare wire to get to some good clean wire to solder to. The other was just a matter of cutting off the bad end and strip the coating. (This is where the long process of finding the tools and 3 inch piece of 18 gauge wire took a while in my messy garage).

After getting what I needed, I did as mentioned above.

I used shrink sleeve on both connections after soldering to help protect everything. I then started the car and checked low and high heat, It worked. I will now have a toasty bum when the Minnesota temps get back down to -35, and I have to go to work.

Tools needed: cutter and stripper, solder gun. electric wiring compatible solder, a couple inches of small 18-22 gauge shrink sleeve, a small piece of 18 gauge wire, utility knife (to cut the foam for more access to the bare wire for the heater), small screwdriver (to get the plastic retainer apart).

It has been a week now, and I have used the seat heater every day with no problems and a warm seat.

What were the symptoms before you decided to take the seat apart?

My pass. seat feels like it comes on and goes off randomly.

Both of my seats seam to have a pulse with the heat, it gets warm, then seems to cool a little, then warms again. I don't know if it is the way it is supposed to work or not.

Thank you. This was the exact problem with my seat.
Now winter is not so bad

Thanks for the great write up! Both my seats have no heat at all and I had given up thinking that I would ever have heated seats again becuase I thought I would have to get a new heating element and then have it upholstered in. Thanks again Stinger-427.

Thanks for the write-up! The heat in my drivers side seat stopped working last summer and I froze my butt off all winter. Now hopefully it is just a broken wire like you showed.
