I am not very familiar with the '86 inner workings. I am sure that someone will come on soon to help you. If I had to guess, you could be getting a false reading for one of three reasons.

1. Bad gauge. Replace the gauge with an aftermarket unit. I am pretty sure that on the '86, the gauges are modular and should just pull out. Replace with a unit that is the same size/type and you should be good.

2. Bad sending unit. Basically the floater in your fuel tank that tells your gauge what reading to display. It should come out in one piece with the pump and you should be able to get a replacement from an autoparts store.

3. Break in the wiring between the sending unit and the gauge. To tell if this is the problem, hook up a voltmeter at the connection to the gauge. If you have any voltage this isn't the problem.

I hope this helps, but I am not experienced at all with the '86's. Good luck. More people should be on here during the week so I would check back in later if I were you.

It could be a ground issue between the sending unit and the frame
