engine swap
ok got another question...my mechanic seems to think i may have a problem with the wire harness in my 86 ls but the guys at gm tell me there should be no problems if i throw in a 350

RE: engine swap
most GM small blocks have the same needs as far as electrical. If you are carburated there should be no differences between the harness's. I haven't done a carburated swap in about three years but if i remember right there should be 3 or 4 wires on the starter, 1 bolted to the alternator (and two in the plug),1 to the dist.(2 if equipped with a tach), and if you have a electric choke on the carb there will be one there. this is with using mechanical gauges, if using stock oil/temp sending units just swap them to the new engine and the motor should start. (this is not including any emissions equipment, I am not required to have my vehicles tested)

RE: engine swap
there is no problem with the wireing harness in your car you can throw in any small block or big block chevy with no mods
to the harness !!! |
RE: engine swap
It may depend if you now have a V6 or a V8 engine in the Monte. I have an '86 V6 which has a fuel injection harness. I am converting to a 350 V8, non-computer carb, non-computer distributer, and SS gage package for the dashboard. Also changing out the 3 speed, lock-up transmission for a 4 speed overdrive (200R4). I will have some re-wiring to do for all this.
