Default Engine light

I had my engine light come today on my 2002 SS. I had the code read and discovered it was a faulty gas cap. Turned out it was just my gas cap not tightened on. So I've got the problem resolved. My question is how long does it take for the code to clear and the check engine light to go out? It will clear on it's own right?

Thx

Mike

you can unplug the battery for 30 seconds then that will clear the codes.

Otherwise it's like 50 starts.

Wow that takes a while. I guess I'll pull the battery cable for a few. Thanks!

Pulling the battery cable on a OBD II system will not clear the codes like the older cars. You can clear the codes with a code reader/scan tool, or if the condition doesn't repeat in a cretin amount of key cycles(I don't remember how many) it will go off also. i would just go to your nearest autozone, or local parts store that has a scan tool and delete the codes.

Sure it will. It's a reset to the PCM which is what stores the codes.
