Default DexCool Question

Hi all,

My car will be 2 years old soon.

Even though Dexcool says that it is usable for 5 years, I don't trust it.

How often doany of you change your "5 year" Dexcool.

I do it yearly too. right about this time of year. Perfect way to ensure the mixture is correct for wintertime.

Grand
Most that I read was vhicles with age on it.
If proper care I dont think dex cool is bad.

When checking the anti-freeze
you need to check for protetion level as well as ph level with dex cool.
This is a must with any extended life anti freeze. Not just with Dex Cool.
PH is very important of reg. maintance for this type of anti freeze.

I usually just opt for the prestone pre-mix.

They were old huh?

Maybe it is true, "once you go green, you can't go back."

There is a lot of speculation about the Dex-cool, particulairly from the 3100, 3400's that have issues with the lower intake manifold gaskets. Dex cool gets a lot of blame, when I believe its the gaskets itself. I had a 3400 in my old minivan. Some of our freightliners at work have it, without problems.

We have over 175,000mi on my wife's '99 Silverado Z71 Sportside 5.3L. I had the dex-cool replaced at 110,000mi with dex-cool. No problems so far. I will replace it again at 200,000mi. I thought this would be a good test to see how well it held up. I'm happy so far. Not sure what will go in then.
I agree that it's the gaskets not holding up on some engines. Compatibility issues. I'm guessing they still used the same gasket material from pre '97 when they made the switch.
I honestly never expected it to last this long. (KNOCK ON WOOD). Been running Mobil 1 the whole time too. Never done anything to it other than basic maintaince.
