brake lights not working.....
ok guys, i have searched but not found exactly the answer. my brakes lights don't work when pressed, now the middle in the middle of back window work, turn signals work fine. put in new bulbs, brake light switch should b fine since middle brake light works. I've checked fuses, but i honestly aren't sure which one is for brake lights. but because the middle one works i dnt think its a fuse. Now i have heard of this happening with other symptoms, and u have to change the turn signal switch in the steering wheel. any ideas?????? also my lights around AC/heat controls don't work either, didnt know if this wqas related. Any ideas for the problems before i change the turn signal switch??? Thanks everyone!!!!!

I assume from your user name that your Monte Carlo is a 1998? If so, check fuse #23.
|
yes, sorry it is a 98 monte carlo z34. i checked the #23 fuse and it looks fine. I'm getting frustrated.
|
No problem, it just makes it easier for other members to help if as much info as possible is provided. ;) If #23 fuse is good then the problem is not a blown fuse. You said you weren't sure which fuse was for the brake lights and that would be #23. If it is good then the problem is elsewhere. BTW the high center brake light is on a different fuse which is #6. Do you have a self powered test light or a multimeter? You may want to pull the fuse and test it just for grins before tearing into the multifunction switch. I have seen fuses before that looked perfectly good but had no continuity.
|
yes, i agree with u on checking with a multimeter just to be sure. i had to go to work. if in fact the fuse is good, should i replace the TSS or the multifunction lever? thanks again.

Multi function switch failure, it is fairly common on 5th gens
|
just to clarify, my turn signals are working fine. In fact everything on my turn signal lever works i.e, turn signals, wipers, etc. So should i should change the multifunction switch (turn signal lever), or the actual turnsignal switch,(the round plastic switch under the steering wheel)? im electrician by trade so im confident i can do it but just wana make sure im changing the right thing. Thanks again guys!!!!

It's the contacts in the multifunction switch that can become worn/dirty/oxidized that causes the problem. You can still have indicators and the switch may be at fault for no brake lights. Something you can try to verify it is the switch is to have someone stand behind the car observing the brake lights as you apply them and wiggle the indicator lever. If the brake lights flicker or come on you know it is the contacts and the switch needs to be replaced.

Check fuse 30 and fuse 5. If those are ok, than its most likely the turn switch. Just looked at the wiring diagram. Other possibilties include broken wire, and melted sockets.
|
yes sir, i have tried to wiggle the lever, and the lights do not com on at all, thats y i was trying to clarify. evrything on the lever works i.e. wipers, turnsignals, etc. im stumped on where i go from here. im pretty confident its either the TSS or the multifunction lever but cant identify which one it is. any ideas????? thanks again I will try fuse #30 and #5 when i go home for lunch. and the TSS is the round switch under the steering wheel not the multifunction lever? the terminology is confusing me sorry, but thanks again.
|
ok, i checked fuses #30, #5, and #23. All were good. blinkers work fine. turn signals work, brakes lights do not do anything when i hold them down and jiggle the multifunction lever. im goin to take a stab at it and try and change the TSS (round shaped switch under steering wheel), i will see if theres anything obviously wrong (broken wire, melted wires, loose contacts, etc). anybody have any other ideas before i dig into this would b greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone.

this most likely is your answer...... |
I've checked everything and it's the switch for the blankers.

I would check that your brake switch is still connected and or working. This is an old Thread that was related to Blinkers. Not sure how the Multi Function switch would help with a Brake light problem
Also If the Brake switch is still good I would check the wiring from the passenger side, THere should be a white wire that is taking the brake light back to the trunk area. James |
