Replacing the water pump in the 5 gen is a breeze. Make sure you bleed the system afterward and clean the mating surfaces really good. BTW, have you noticed the WP leaking at all? Double check your fans just to be on the safe side since those cars are notorious for the fans going out.

Good to know. Thanks!

do your thermostat install since you have it. bleed the car completely.

Drive. If it happens again and gets warm, pull over and try to bleed the car. If air keeps coming back and screwing you up it's likely going to be the headgasket.

happened in my 95 lumina 3.1L

Yikes! Not the best of alternatives to a thermostat, but thanks for the heads up.

yeah I spent a bunch of money on diagnosing and thermostats and water pumps, etc.

so if the problem persists, I would just start with getting a pressure test done to see if it's an internal problem.

Well boys... I'm pretty pissed right now.

...The reason there were no leaks before was that there wasn't any fluid to leak, it was already gone. I filled up the radiator and after I started the car and let the thermostat open up I got a constant stream of water out the back side of the motor. I can't see where it's coming from, but I'm sure we all know where it's coming from Head gasket time for this beast.

So how difficult of a job are we looking at for a head gasket job here? I'm used to 2.0L DOHC motors, so I don't know what I'm gettin' myself into here. I assume I will have to remove the valvetrain, but will I have to touch the timing of the motor? How long does it take a fairly adept motor guy to do the job?

Thanks guys for helpin' me out here... this sucks.

ChibiBlackSheep Nov 12, 2009 02:33 PM

Time to invest in a manual for the car to help you? Shouldn't be too bad though, just time consuming.

ded548 Nov 12, 2009 04:01 PM

Do I have to mess with the timing to pull the heads?

Also is this an interference motor?

I can't find hardly any information on this motor. Does it have an engine code? People on here tend to call it the 3100, but the search results always yield some old trucks everywhere else. It's confusing.

ded548 Nov 12, 2009 04:36 PM

Eh, strike that... I looked at the leak just now. It's a cracked block. Looks like I'm lookin' at a new motor.

MAMONTE Nov 12, 2009 06:33 PM

Dang, that totally sucks man. Cracked block on your "new" car. Sounds like whoever sold the car, sold it for a reason.

Sorry to hear about this.

ded548 Nov 12, 2009 07:40 PM

Yeah, there's no way they didn't know about it. Thanks for your condolances. I'm kind of stuck with it now... Come help me choose what motor to put in it now >>> https://montecarloforum.com/forum/sh...ad.php?t=17091
