305 motor upgrades
Hello all - new to the group and brand new to car restoration. I have an 88 MC SS. This car has a cracked block. I was able to find a used, running 305 that I picked up for $150. This car was verified running when it was removed from another 88. My question is if I should start replacing parts while out of the car. Manifold, heads, etc?
Any help and guidance is greatly appreciated. |
Biggest thing you can do is change the gaskets while engine is out. Oil pan , timing cover front seal , rear main seal and valve cover gaskets would all be a good start. And while the engine is out its the best time to change the front pump seal on the transmission. Good luck

i would change the timing chain ,water pump ,fuel pump, air filter , oil/oil filter and gaskets. If you have a carburetor i would change it or rebuild/clean it up. you dont know how long it been siting with old gas. same goes with gas tank . clean it up of all the rust in tank and put POR15 Fuel Tank Sealer https://www.por15.com/POR-15-Fuel-Tank-Sealer
I had a 350 rebuilt it came with all the gaskets and new timing chain . the other stuff i did on my own because i do not wat to put a lot of money into a engine for it just to overheat and warp the engine. Chevy is well know to make engine block out of metals that warp easily |
