1997 Monte Carlo with a 1996 motor, need to convert 3x to 7x!

Hi everyone! So my Dad knows his way around car repair & electronics etc and has been trying to fix his 1997 Monte Carlo that's been immediately shutting down on start, and after a week of trying everything I've been able to find about the passlock security stuff he thinks he's got the problem narrowed down and wanted me to "ask the internet for help" (he's in his 70s lol)

I got him to write up his question to post for him:

Help! I have a 1997 Monte Carlo. The car is very pretty and in excellent condition. At 150,000 km the camshaft broke but this car is still like brand new so I decided to replace the engine with a used 3100 from the wreckers. But the motor that they sold me, although it looked the same, was from a 1996. I never really got concerned and the swap went well.

Problem: The crankshaft position sensor on the 1996 is a 3x sensor. The 1997 PCM wants a 7x sensor. I know about the external ring and sensors that mount on the crank pulley but I didn't want to go that route. Is there any conversion circuit to go from 3x to 7x? Has anyone got any other ideas on what I can try? Thanks!
Any help I can pass on would be awesome and I can ask him any questions that would help give an answer! He wants to get it working reliably before he tries to take it on a fishing trip and gets himself stranded in the middle of nowhere lol
