1970 Monte 4 speed
 

I have a 70 monte that was an automatic. but back in my high school days I had a 71 monte that had an original 4 speed set up. it originally came with a 402 big block but when I got it, it had sbc 350. when the body went bad on me I took everything from the radiator to the rear end off. that included the pedals all the linkage and saved them. Now on this 70 monte I have, I decided to install all the 4 speed. but I came across a big problem, my z bar does not align with the frame bracket. the engine side sits up higher than the frame. about 2". the engine in there now is a 400 sbc out of the 70. I have tried different motor mounts for that year and still to no avail. Am I missing something? I hope someone has a 4 speed monte and could take or have pics and see what Im doing wrong. Any help greatly appreciated.

Your going have to build up a new Bracket for the Z-Bar to attach to the frame in order to make it line up properly. R u sure you have the ball in the correct location on the motor? Maybe you have to build your own Motor Mounts?

Also the frames may have changed from model year to model year..
That could also be the source of your alignment issue....

So you may want to call your local dealer or hotrod shop to make sure the frames are the same!:thumbsup:

Does the 1970 model motor mounts differ from the ones used on the 1971? ... Did a 1971 Model Monte Carlo ever come with a standard shift?
These are things that need to be considered... If in 1971... the Monte Carlo didn't come out with a standard shift model... Then your going to have to custom make, motor mounts and frame mounts for the Z-bar in order for it to fit/operate properly.

thanks for your reply, the 1971 money that I had came or iginally with a four speed set up. all the current parts I'm using on the 70 came off the 71. the 71 came with a 402 big block, I later installed a 350 with all the same parts of the big block . I used the same motor mounts from the big block to the small block. I later removed all the parts from the radiator to the rear end and save them for 25 years. now I have this 1970 Monte Carlo that I have installed everything on to it with a 400 small block. but now the Z bar does not align with the frame. there are what seems to provisions for the Z bar ball on the block. there is one right above the oil filter but looks like it's for an oil fitting of some type. I have done researched and I cannot find any difference in the frames from year to year even the chevelle frame is almost identical to the Monte Carlo. But I will do some more searching on what you suggested. Thank you again.

What I meant to say... Did the 1970 model ever come with a standard shift option... It was a mistake on my part about the 1971 comeing with the standard shift option... Daaa... Silly me...

Ok I sure will. The 1970 model year was offered with both a four speed and a three speed. The 1971 model year had more production manual shift cars than in 1970. I think it seems like the answer to my particular situation is to buy a bracket to relocate the ball stud.

I was wondering if anyone knows will an edelbrock performer rpm intake model 7101with an edelbrock 600 carb fit under a 71 monte stock hood

My 1970 monte is running a warmed over sbc 400 and it has an rpm intake ( non air gap) with a 3310 holley with a 3" K&N air cleaner, but I have a cowl hood on it. I will check and see if it would of worked with out the cowl hood.

Make sure you are using the correct hole in the block for the z-bar stud, many sbc 400s did not have the holes for the stud drilled or tapped. Look straight across from the frame bracket and see if there is a flat pad on the bock.
Just put a manual trans in a 2nd gen Camaro with a sbc 400 in it, had to drill and tap the hole in the block for the stud and had a real hard time making a clutch linkage to clear a set if mid length headers.
