07 MC Lt won’t move in park, steering lock up, & Speedo jumping

Hello, my buddy just bought a 07 Monte Carlo LT yesterday with 208,000 miles 3.5L v6 flex fuel. He drove it around it felt fine. He went and bought it and as soon as he went to drive it away he went to reverse and the speedometer jumper up all over the place as high as 60 and he wasn’t moving. He backed up a little more and stopped for traffic, went to go and the car acting like it was in neutral except the steering wheel locked up as well. He went to drive and same thing. Turned it on and off 3 times before it worked. As he is driving home he was in a parking lot and the car did the same thing and completely stop, wouldn’t turn. He had to turn off and on the car. We noticed the air box had a leak and did a temp fix with tape but there was still leaks. The Speedo didn’t jump as much but it still acted as if it popped out of reverse and went to neutral and the steering locked.

Finding an air box was actually harder than we thought so he’s gonna get an ram air intake and read on here maybe a MAF sensor. We figured something might be wrong with the trans, hoping just a sensor or fluid but we aren’t sure about the steer. We both fix aircraft so we got the mindset just no knowledge of cars.

He said he just replaced the power steering pump. He is going to the store today to replace every periodical maintenance like fluids, spark plugs, etc

The speedo/steering lockup sounds like a possible grounding issue. Or computer issue. It shouldnt be related to the airbox or MAF or anything like that.

Until you find out what it is and fix it, be extremely cautious. Can you imagine what could happen if the steering locked up at high speed??

...And nothing wrong with that painters tape fix. If it works, it aint stupid.
