Default Putting in a new stereo

Particularly the JVC KD-R310...
I still have the stock stereo right now.
Every car audio place I've been to says that the installation will be around $200...
because of some special $80 part/adapter because my car is a 2001 ("old").

I'm just wondering if this is bs? Or if there is maybe some way around it? Or if I could by that part and install it myself, thus saving the other $120?

they want 200$ with the unit? than yes, it's a lagitimate price from a shop. but if you're just doing a deck, it's EXTREAMLY easy. but that price is pretty good considering they'll charge you 25$ for the dash kit, 80-110$ for the chime unit, 10$ for the antena adapter. so that's only 65$ above parts. which is exceptionaly reasonable for an install. I recommend you do this. get the chime unit online, get the antena adapter off ebay or something online for dirt cheap since it's just a peice of wire, and you can even find the install brackets cheap. in fact. i have one laying around that I'm not using, where do you live?

It's $200 for the installation, plus $100 for the stereo itself. So $300 total.
I live in Florida.

Could you send me links to the parts you're talking about?

yeah.

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_120GMOS...r.html?tp=3486

thats the one thats compatable with Onstar, but if you don't need that, you can get a cheaper one, i forget all of them but thats the most common, the one i use isn't that one and it's a cheap genereic version from schoche and it works fine. cost me like 50$ online, you can find em around that just google.

than you'll need a dash kit

this is the antena adapter you need.

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_1209920...eiver-Kit.html

these are the components cruchfild will sell you, i dont like the dash kit, but it's alright.

let me show you some other options from sonic.

dash kit

chime unit, this is the unit i use, as you can much better price.

heres the antena adapter from sonic. idk what they do with shipping but i'd def go with sonic over cruchfield for the price difference.

also for a deck, i recommend a pioneer, alpine deck over jvc any day of the week, simpler to use. more people will be able to help you figuire it out, plus it wont break in a year ;P and i'd do it all online, car audio shops will have the largest mark ups you'll ever find. that jvc unit you want is probobly 40$ for them. if you buy the deck from sonic they put 30$ twords your install gear, so the cage and adapter are pretty much covered free

some decks i'd recommend for your price range

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...Pod-Cable.html

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...able-ASWC.html

this last one is probobly the only one of these i'd use for a system, but their all decent. the last one i've heard good things about, and the pioneer DEH P4200UB is pretty nice too, i've had good experience with pioneer, they make reliable decks, very simple. lota people talk dirt on them but in reality they have the miles of experienced and proven reliability years ahead of these pups. they don't know **** majority. one thing to keep in mind in car audio, everybody knows everything and nobody knows anything, never rely on one source, and i encourage you to take more advice other than my own

Thanks, I will definitely look into all of that. I'm still trying to get different opinions and figure out the best move.

That's what most people tell me, but I just really don't want to fork out that much money so I can plug in my ipod :/

If you buy the parts you need you can install it yourself and save the installation money... You can get specific directions on how to do it through crutchfield.. Its really not that hard once you get whats going on.

I highly recommend buying the parts your self, it'll be much cheaper for you. the installers may not like it but they should still do the install at a pro rated price with those parts deducted out.

I've been hearing about problems with the GM09SR wiring harness? Making me kind of hesitant to buy......
