Dash speakers 3 1/2" vs. 4"

81 Monte Carlo....it says they are 3 1/2 (3.5")....can I use 4" instead, would they still mount up?

they would be too big and the hole would have to be made bigger.

thank you very much for the reply
ill decide what to do soon.....3.5" speakers will probably just sound as oversized tweeters more-so than "mid-range"

I bought some replacement dash speakers for my 81. 3.5in Boss 150w. They don't sound too terribly bad, but could definitely be better. Get back to me if you find anything good. In a few days I will be hooking my up my subs, and would like some better sound coming from the front end of the car.

3" drivers, with the proper cross overs will sound amazing, the frequenzys at whitch a 3" driver can produce are by far the most sensative range our ears can hear, placment becomes very important, they must be equal and well placed, angles and blockages can be very easily heard.

I'm pretty sure the dash is the same. How did you secure them?

I have my subs already hooked up...have Pioneer 6x9s in the back and stock front completely shot
So I guess ANYTHING would sound better now :-D

If you are looking for recommendation from me......Pioneer, thats my brand I "swear by".....Head Unit, and 6x9s especially
I really don't know about Pioneers smaller components speakers....but I trust them
Going to run you about $50 (prob. at lowest) a pair for 3.5"

If you looking littler more "higher-end" try some JL or JBL or Boston Acoustics

I would say Boss is where I would start a person, better than replacement...but leaves more to be desired (have some in 07 chevy truck)
I would say Pioneer is the best mid-high.....and all I ever need great sound
High end.....I don't really have much experience, cuz I never go that high....but the ones I named (JL JBL Bouston Acoustics) seem to be fan faves

Just my opinion though :-)

I currently have Boss 3.5's in the dash. They do leave more to be desired though.

Right now I only have one rear speaker hooked up, some terrible off brands that the previous owner had installed. I took one out and realized it was rigged in there so bad it was going to take alot of time to replace, as the mounts were gone and they were strung up by paperclips.

But its all good, the Sundown Audio subs in the trunk more than make up for the missing sound.
