2004 SS Driver's Air Bag Removal

Is there a specialty tool that makes it easy to remove the airbag on a 2004 MCSS? We have the leather wheel with extra radio and cruise buttons. On the back of the steering wheel there is a plastic protection cover that makes it very difficult to get to the spring loads holding the three pins for the air bag. It looks like you need to slide a tool up in behind the cover and turn to release the bag.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Larry

You can't get a flat-head to the clips on the back and turn them counterclockwise?

You need at least two flat head screw drivers (three really help). The plastic cover being on or off does not make a difference. Put the screw drivers in the small slots on the back, about a 90 degree turn and that should release the retaining clip and pull the bag forward (might take a little wiggling).

So let me get this straight - The three holes in the back of the cover have three torx screws in them that hold the back cover onto the steering wheel. I removed the torx screws. Do I go in that same place with a flat head screwdriver to release the air bag? Did I need to get the torx screws out of there to release the air bag?

I will probably end up feeling pretty stupid on how much I have struggled with this in the end :-)

I haven't done this, but I BELIEVE those 3 torx screws are to remove the face, and there should be 4 other holes on the back of the steering wheel that a flat-head can fit into and release the air-bag clips.

Really, only 3 on ours? I thought it was a square to pop? Like I said, haven't actually done it on my monte.
