ZZP Downpipe
 

I'm highly thinking about getting a ZZP down pipe with cat attached, and i just got two magnaflow mufflers. I was thinking the aluminized down pipe because im trying to save any amount of money that i can. What are the pros and cons of the aluminum downpipe?

Pros: cost
cons: will rust out quickly and probably need replacing

How fast is fast, i don't get why they make it if it's just gonna rust out.

also, what is the difference between the welded in and bolt in? I get the diffrence but why pick one over the other. I have a 2000 monte ss completely stock, if that makes a difference here.

Bolt in - Straight replacement for the stock one. Unbolt the stocker, bolt your ZZP DP right up.
Weld in - Involves cutting and welding. Makes for a more permanent installation. I don't believe you need any gaskets other then the one connecting to the rear exhaust manifold.

I recommend bolt in.

You ask why they make something if it's just going to rot, because people want options. Some people live in areas or only drive their car in conditions where rotting out is not a big issue. Weight is another issue. I imagine aluminum is lighter, if you're going for a 1/4 mile time, weight is a factor.

If this is your daily driver, I recommend going stainless, other wise, I would not bother. Even if you went with other options, it's a single walled DP (the factory one is double walled).

I have the aluminum pipe and I don't see any rust on it - unless they sent me the wrong one.

Is your aluminum pipe on Precious? If so, winterizing probably helps alot.

Granted, I'm not an expert on metals and corrosion.... :(

Aluminized has a coating on it that will help prevent it from rusting. But typically if it gets some scratches or hit it can rust on that point because the coating is gone.

You just might have been lucky that the pipe hasn't been getting hit with stuff :)

Salt and winter driving can also make the coating disappear. Perhaps you also haven't had enough of that yet.
