Default Z34 Exhaust Question

I'm kinda new around here, and to Wbody cars. I mean I've had a 99 Monte Carlo LS before but always wanted a Z34. Finally got one, but it has some rust issues, mainly in the exhaust. Basically from the rear axle back, might as well be a write off. The welds at the Y are shot, the mufflers have pretty decent sized holes in them, and they arent hanging evenly. Was thinking about exhaust options, but I know how easy it is to make DOHC 3.4s sound like poop.

Now... this all leads to my actual point. I've always loved the sound of Grand Prix GT and GTP. To me they have just the right tone to them. My question being, since they are both W body cars... would a Grand Prix Exhaust line up with the hangers on My 96 Z34? Mostly worried about axle back, not full exhaust.

On another point... if that wouldnt work.. what set up would give me the nicest sound from the 3.4? Thanks a lot for your time. Any comments or feedback would be greatly appriciated.

As far as sound goes, the Grand prix gt and gtp are 3800 engines while the Z34 has the 3.4 dohc. So you wont get the same sound, try to search around youtube and see if you can find some videos to get an idea of a sound you'd like to have. As far as fitment i really don't know.

I know they up graded the exhaust components.
You can now get the flex pipe separate from the Y pipe.
I'm running 2 chambered mufflers with tails from
Xcelerator..
It has a great sound without sounding like a rice burner!! And it still has a resonator...
But mine has the 3.8..

I should have been a bit more specific lol. I meant the 96 and before GT and GTP with the 3.4 in them. (granted I do love the 3800 grand prix sound as well) But either way, thanks for the advice though =]

And yea i've heard a lot of great sounding 3800 cars. Seems as if there's a much bigger market out there for the 3800 than the 3.4 dohc. It kinda sucks lol. Thats what I get for wanting the 3.4 lol. Looks like I'll have to start gettin creative

The GTPs he's talking about were basically Lumina Z34s. 5 speed and all.

It does suck that there's a lack of aftermarket with LQ1's... And parts are pricey. Custom would be the way to go

As far as the exhaust goes, I have no idea what to tell you. I've had a good sounding 3100 and 3800 with Flowmaster Deltaflow 40 series. But the LQ1 is it's own beast... Sorry I can't help more as far as exhaust goes.

The fastest N/A LQ1 MC I know of ran a high 14 in the quarter mile... Lots of work went into it.

I've been wondering the engine code for these cars lol. Thanks man =]

And yea, thats the GTP I'm talkin about. Seems like the 3.4 is a bit of a bastard child in the bigger w-body cars, so I kind of figured I might be dealin with hard to find power and parts lol.

Do the 3800 and LQ1 Monte Carlos run the same exhaust? I'm just curious.

Do most people go Flowmaster on these cars (regardless of motor)? Because I was lookin at running Thrush or some sort of dual chambered muffler. Hoping for a bit of a low rumble at idle.

Are there very many LQ1 MCs on this site?

AFAIK the exhaust is the same, but I'm not sure. But yes, parts are hard to come by. You can check out milzymotorsports.com, that's the only guy I know of that does parts.

Lots of different exhausts have been put on these cars. I personally like Flowmaster, others like Magnaflow, others like straight piped... check youtube, might help you out a little more than I can

that 14's DOHC was mine. its engine died at 215,000 miles. the exhaust i had was a magnaflow muffler where the stock resonator was, a high flow cat, a glass pack and then a Y with straight pipes. flowed great and sounded amazing. IMO the DOHC sounds 10000% better then any 3800.

after my DOHC died i did the 3800 swap and have my old exhaust and headers on it. it sounds deeper but has a little drone that the dohc didnt have.

you can click the links in my sig for pics and info about my dohc build. if you need tuning i still have two 96 pcms that i can flash and get you some more power. if your handy with a dremal you can port your intakes and delete the air pump ports in the exhaust.
