Stock Intake question

When I was in the buying process everytime I started the car it was really loud coming from the engine bay. I couldn't pin point it and the car ran great and started withou hesitation. The dealer warrented the car for 12 months/12,000 miles. I figured if there was something wrong I would find it. My curiosity got the bast of me today so I popped the hood and started the car. Immediatley I recognize the sound of an intake. I look and there is a stock box there. Crack it open and it has a fram air filter. I look behind the headlight and see something that makes me wonder (see the attached pic).I open the stock box up and see see that the middle section is just a 3 inch tube that goes from behind the headlight to the panel filter. Is this the way all of them are?Not alot of restriction there from what I see. Look at the pic and let me know what you think. Again it sounds just like everytime I put an intake ona car.

I am thinking about modifying the stock box to accept a k&n cone. Here are some flow stats I was looking at.

RE: Stock Intake question

Cool. I wasn't sure if the factory box was open like that with the mesh screen. Fram air filters are good for 50 HP to the wheels didn't you know. lolIf that is stock this is the loudest stock intake I have heard. Most cars have a resanator somewhere in the box to quiet it down.

I am thinking of building my own CAI with this filter from summit.

K&N's air filter that outflows stock, and adds up to 15 hp.
These reusable K&N Filtercharger air filters outflow any other air filterup to 900 cfmfor power gains of up to 15 hp. They use a surgical cotton fabric soaked in oil as their tack barrier. Sandwiched between an aluminum screen wire, the holes in the cotton catch tumbling air and straighten it out. Since air moving in a straight line flows faster, these K&N air filters actually improve airflow. They can be covered by up to 1/4 in. of debris before air restriction makes cleaning necessary. These K&N air filters come pre-oiled, and many are available as a direct fit for your application. So, if you want better performance from your air filter, then you need to have one of these K&N air filters in your ride.
