how can i tell if my catalitic converter is bad?

hi,

my car at times loses power, specialy when warm.
i would step on the gas all the way and the car will not want to accelerate it' hard to explain but press the gas all the way down ,the rpm's go up but kinda like without any power, i put it in neutral and press the gas the rmp's go up put kinda sluggish.
it only does every now and then.
it also smells sometime.
im thinking its the catalitic converter, is there a way for me to check if it's that?

pleaseeee help.....

I've been told that it gets cherry red when it's plugged up. have you had a check engine light lately?

You can check with one of those temperature guns- it'll be drastically hotter on the inlet (if its visibly cherry red after driving, you know its real bad).
