Gutted Airbox

I was at a pick a part yard today helping my friend find a motor mount for his GTP when he offered to buy me an intake to gut. I think I cut a little too much off but I'll let you guys be the judge lol. It's goin in tomorow afternoon, I'll let you guys know how it works out.

My god, I didn't think it was possible that such an easy project would be so satisfying. Im fairly certain the only reason I see such a large improvement is because of the ghetto hood scoop forcing cold air into the engine compartment, and now with this new box the car feels completely different. The throttle seems more responsive, it feels like I've gained 20-30HP, and to top it all off the intake makes the prettiest of noises. I've actually had a few people say it sounds like a V8 now, and as cool as that sounds I dont think i could ever part with my 3800.

Anyways moral of the story is, if you can cut a straight line, then gut our airbox for a cheap and easy CAI.

I cant really tell what you did but if you could write a small write up id really like to try something like this before i spend the money on a wizardair

I had cut mine a few weeks back the size of the opening behind the headlight and am using a K&N filter. Gives it a little more growl.

I've read mixed reviews about this mod.... Some say it's worth it in performance, others say it improves performance, but found fuel economy to go way down.

I've thought about doing that and getting some insulating material to cover the inside with (help make it like a CAI, by preventing heat from radiating into the box).

MPGs go down because people like to hear it ;)

LOL...Yep, that's exactly why the MPG goes down. I installed a K&N CAI on my Blazer and saw a little better than a 2 MPG gain. Eventually I will put a CAI on the Monte, and hope to see similar results.

glad it worked out, you probably gained like 1-3 whp but still the sound is always fun

The MPG seems like it would actually be a bit better with the car breathing so much easier, although with the new sounds it makes I tend to open it up a lot more than usual. I'm sure once I get used to it and calm down I'll see a good gain. As far as gaining horsepower I doubt I got more than 4 or 5, but it feels like I restored a LOT of the power since the engines not suffocating. Next project is remaking my hood scoop into a real ram air. I've also got an M90 sitting on my porch that I'm cleaning up real nice. Got a job interview in a few hours so I should be able to get the rest of an L67. Hopefully some time this summer I can have my car up there with the rest of the montes here.

Can anyone link me a write up on how to do this. I don't wanna mess it up
