Gutted Airbox

I have done a search on my question but have not seemed to find an answer so you will have to excuse me if this has already been addressed in another post.

When you gut the airbox does that increase the possibility of water getting into the intake during normal driving?

Is that the reason that the airbox contains all those baffles and conpartments; to keep water when driving through large puddles and driving rain out? Or is it made that way to quiet the intake noise?

I want to do it mainly because I cannot find a CAI application for my engine(3.9L). I would be adding in the K & N airfilter after the operation.

Any knowledgeable inputs would be appreciated.

Hey Dan, I had read that the baffles were created to keep the air intake noise low. The internals baffles are the ones that are cut out to remove the restriction of air & increase performance. Plus, a K&N will increase the air flow.... Fuel + Air = Power...WoW[:-] There are several members with more knowledge then I, and I'm sure they can add 2 your question.[8D]

the airbox is also the housing for your pcm to keep that outa the elements, but they really are restrictive

I think Spacerider nailed it as good as I could have if not better...

But the answer is no, your intake is still well protected from the water.

Okay, that settles it! I will get out the Dremel tool this weekend and Free up the Flow.

Thanks!

Hey tell me how it was because I'm thinking of doing it but I don't know if I wanna start changing things in my engine.

RE: Gutted Airbox

i guess i need to see pics of these baffles. cause what i remember from my factory air box, the ribs/baffles werent much of a restriction.

the main restriction in the factory box is that it breaths thru such a small panel filter... and the location of the intake tube cant even take full use of that filter!

i would recomend becoming creative and either build a new PCM case or buy one from pfyc.com they have ones for the 6th gen 3800 series motor and should work. when it comes to mods its best to do lots of research and be as creative as possible. go to my WWW i have a few writeups on doing a custom intake. although for a 5th gen, you might get ideas to use on yours.
