Fenderwell Intake

Ok I just removed my fender well intake and reinstalled the stock air box and WOW! Feels like I have way more power with the stock air box, how is that? I thought maybe I lost my low end power when I removed the mufflers but that wasnt the case. I had the K&N air filter with it... Pulled off from a red light and even heard the tires sqeak a little which I thought couldnt be done with the 20' rims and low profiles! The only bad thing about removing it was the whistling sound it made. The filter wasnt really dirty either and I had it for about 6 months now... Whats up with that?

I suppose results may change based on a lot of factors..

My fenderwell intake has proven to be nothing but profitable for me. It seems to add a bit of power, and it lowered my cruising RPM's at speeds above 75 mph, somehow. It has also increased my MPG's per fill up by about .5-1.5.

What type of fender well intake do you have? Is it possible it was installed improperly? Maybe it wasn't sealed up correctly? Any pics?

As far as I know it was sealed correctly. :p

Does the most restrictive part of the inside diameter match or exceed the inside diameter of the opening to the throttle body. My guess is, perhaps air is not flowing properly at certain temps??? Just an uneducated thought.

i've heard NUMEROUS times that the flexible tubing is the worst thing to do for an intake. A couple have actually said that simply removing the 2-4 inches of flex tube that's stock will make for some decent gains in air flow. I'd say flex tubing coupled with no shield from engine heat, may have made it a fairly restrictive WAI, which would have an opposite affect than what you were going for. Best thing to do is get some ABS plastic and replace as much flex-tube as possible. The smoother the path from filter to intake manifold, the better off you are.

--also, i'm pretty sure ABS is a poor conductor of heat, meaning that the air from the filter wouldn't get as warm as it would with the current flex tube. Probably wouldn't even need to have a shield if you didn't want to. I would though

You can do a cold air intake by yourself for much less than 500$. I paid right around 75$ for my setup in it's entirety. And it only took me 30 minutes to pull out the stock airbox and get the new setup in there. Most retail car shops like Advanced Auto Parts have everything you need there. There are also some pre-made kits but I'm personally unaware of any tailored for the 5th gen 3.1l engines.
