exhaust cutout
Any of you guys ever installed an exhaust cutout in front of the cat on a 3800? I imagine without a custom tune it will throw a code but I am curious how these engines sound completely open.

I have one on my ls4. I know on a stock ls4 there isn't room to install one in front of the cat. I would imagine it would be very similar on a 3800. I have heard one open headers and it wasn't the most pleasant sound I have ever heard but it was really loud.

My CAT is downstream from my cutout about mid car. If you look you can see the O2 sensor around the bend from the cat. Not throwing any codes.

Thanks for the feedback guy's. Nice pics too. The underside of your car is pristine dude!

Wow Greg the underside of your car is amazing. Good work

Greg I really like how yours sits up there and super clean looking. I mounted mine farther down the line so it didn't point straight down at the ground and kick up a bunch of dust.

http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/...517_143257.jpg http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/...67207524_o.jpg About a Sept. I was running a new Camaro on the freeway, I pulled ahead hard, then slowed down and they were yelling over to me "The underside of your car is on fire, all serious like. So I pulled onto the shoulder and the Camaro did to, backed up to me and I was like What? And again my car was on fire, yet I smelled know oil or smoke and then it dawned on me the cutout was open, which I told them and it was like "Oh, okay" and we went on our way. So I don't really know how far the flames and hot exhaust emit which is how your wires in close proximity to the cutout raised my question about you possibly melting your O2 wires. |

Wow, your undercarriage is pretty squared away. Looks to be a pretty well maintained factory finish. Mine not so much so as I just drove the car for the first 7 years I had it, so it was needing a good cleaning and protection re-applied. I can see your point about the exhaust system cutout location, my mechanic had his option to locate it where ever he felt like it. Do you have any concern of heat related problems with your O2 sensor wires?

They are tucked up pretty well and the exhaust actually shoots under them a bit. I checked them quite often right after I had it done and they don't even get warm so I didn't bother heat shielding them. As much as I drive it open I would have found out the hard way by now. Oh wow. That would be very alarming. I have been on a few long trips and kept it open during and haven't had much of a problem. It is pointed slightly down to the ground but enough where it exits out the side and not straight down at the ground. |
Both of you guy's cars look good underside. Good feedback too.

I also have a cutout on the down pipe, I am also catless. If you don't turn your rear o2 sensor off in the tune it will most likely throw a code if you install a cutout before the rear o2
