Crossover pipe removal

Ok so im taking out my crossover pipe to fix an exhaust leak by changing the doughnut gasket but i wanted to ask should i remove the studs that hold it together while the engines hot or cold? I dont want to snap the studs so what way should i remove them hot or cold? Also how do i install the doughnut gasket on the pipe? Thanks for any help in advance!

Heat will help loosen them. Soak them in pb blaster a few times before trying as well.
