cheap exhaust mod question

long story short is i have an 01 ss(3.8), its all factory besides a cold air intake and im looking to do anything to the exhaust to make it sound "throatier". im not really looking to purchase a whole cat back kit or anything.

i was thinking of either cutting out the resinator and leave the mufflers, or cutting out the mufflers and leaving the resinator, or cut out both. for whatever i cut out im replacing with same size pipe.

im planning on doing this on my own with some friends or just take it to my mechanic. but i was looking to see if anyone has done this or if i can get some input on thoughts. im trying to avoid any "poppy" ricer sounds but if its only at higher RPM's ill get over it

thanks in advance guys

I would change the mufflers. That would change the sound of your exhaust and you can find a pair for fairly cheap money. One of the members here bought SummitRacing mufflers for about half the price of name brand mufflers. They aren't stainless so you would need to pick up a can of high heat exhaust paint so they won't rust. You would also need to find someone or a shop that can weld the mufflers on your existing system.

Tis true, I be da one wit da Summit muffs.

OK, sorry. Yeah... Summit Race Mufflers for around $30. Just switch out mufflers and you could achieve your desired sound. Try searching YouTube for different clips of exhaust videos to see which one you like the best and go from there. Or be the guinea pig like me, and be different. The choice is yours, and yours alone! lol

Resonator delete alone doesn't change volume much, and from what it sounds like from your post- a muffler delete would be too much. I agree with just changing the mufflers out for different ones.

cool, alright thanks for the help guys, i will keep you posted on what i end up doing. another question that did come to mind is how would glass packs sound? i also saw those while i was looking around for mufflers

Pretty sure I recall hearing glass packs on out montes on youtube. I havent looked and ill probably forget to look tomorrow. Are our mufflers welded on or is it just bolt on?

glass packs would be your loudest choice next to just using straight pipes fyi. cheap...... but loud. i would consult a muffler shop. they have lots of muffler choices and know what they sound like.

Red03SS - yes our mufflers are welded on. Actually the whole exhaust system is all one piece. That's why it's a pain to remove it - you need 2 people. I have the one I just took off the 05 in my back yard. I have to find some way to cut it up into pieces so I can put it in the garbage or find a scrap metal place to dispose of it.

sawzall!! i love those things, especially my cordless one! see if you have a neighbor/buddy you can borrow a sawzall or torch to cut it up. otherwise, a hacksaw will do, it will just will take longer. i myself would use a power tool any time i can;)
