Alternative Intake Setup?
 

Well, I've been doing some thinking. Instead of dropping a ton of money on a TBS and K&N intake, I believe I'm going to go a different route. Using the help from 06MonteSS (Lew) I'm going to use some of his ideas to do the following:

- Remove accordion-style intake elbow with a smooth silicone 3.25" ID elbow.
- Fitting rubber grommet for the crankcase vent breather tube.
- Connected to a Hamburger (or other brand) TBS.
- Simply replacing the stock paper filter with a K&N drop-in filter.

I believe with these changes in conjunction with one another I'll be able to achieve a similar result, besides sound, compared to a CAI option and it would be half the cost.

What are you doing with the stock airbox? keeping it?

Not having the cone keeps the restrictions of your stock airbox.

The only thing I see being very helpful is the smooth tubing to allow the flow.

I'd be keeping the stock airbox. I've been reading a lot on the LS1Tech forum and from what people have said, the stock airbox really isn't that restrictive and the throttle body spacers work pretty well for the LS4. Should increase mileage and add a notch of HP. I'm not looking for much really, that's why I don't want to shell out $300 for a CAI/TBS combo. Honestly it would be more for MPGs than HPs.

is this one of those... I will NEVER get a CAI on my car? because you should just start with the hamburger, and get the CAI eventually.

Oh... No, definitely not. I would love to get the K&N intake one of these days, but they are a pretty penny and I was hoping I would be able to achieve similar results by going a cheaper route.

I suppose I could do that, but I'm quite impatient.

Good idea Rick...try it out and let us know your thoughts afterwards. I'm sure the K&N or Wizair intakes make an extra pony or two, but most just like the intake roar you get as a result of losing the stock intake setup.

Since I've got the 3400, I'll skip aftermarket intakes and such and concerntrate of comfort/handling issues.

I wouldn't go cheaper if you want to upgrade anyway.

spend $45 now to wait and spend $250 anyway later. I'd rather just put the $45 towards the $250 and call it a day. Patience is a virtue, and your car is worth every penny.

Plus you'll never have to buy another air filter, and you'll save some MPGs ;)

getting the actual intake has WAY more pros than cons.

Well... Not neccesarily. I wouldn't call it being cheap, per-say... This is an inexpensive way to achieve similar results. A few people on LS1Tech seem to agree that I'd be good with this setup. I'd save even more money if I end up with the TBS from InSSanity. I'm just not crazy about the AirRaid model. I've heard it whistles.
