5th gen 3.1L--anyone made a SEALED short "ram" air?

I hope i dont get flamed for using "ram" air, but I really dont know what else to call it. It seems that the only options for intakes are to either just drop in a cone filter with a pipe, or do a FWI. I know the FWI will more than likely bring the best results, but Im thinking along a student's budget, and I really dont wanna get rid of my washer tank. I was thinking about fab'ing up a short intake with a 3" K&N cone filter and then make a box either out of plexiglass or sheet metal to encase the cone filter (while still using the bottom of the factory intake box for bottom sealing and mounting points) and putting some sealing strips or weather stripping along the top to seal against the hood. Has anyone attempted this before with any sucess? Just something different I was thinking about trying out.

thats fine. call it what you want.

FWI are actaully really cheep to make. you can do it for less then $50 total. and that includes filter. i have directions on my website how to make it. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/473859/6 as for replacing the wiper tank... its better with a new one, cause you can get to your battery much easyer! you can either go to the junk yard and get a new tank from another car that's smaller, or go to autozone or other parts store and get a new smaller tank.

i have seen some pics of people doing what you say. but it is much more work then doing a FWI and it will still not work aswell. look the site over and if you have questions let me know.

what kind of tank are you talking about being smaller? you mean just making a smaller tank work, or is there another size tank that I could put in as a "direct fit" that would allow me to use a FWI? And do you know a K&N part number thats like a generic 3" cone filter that I could use?

EDIT: I just got to reading your article on your cardomain site. How well did that one from the cutlass work our for ya?

the one from the cutty worked well but its odd shape never looked right to me in the engine bay. but it never had probs. i recently got a tank from a camaro and mounted it infront of radiator inside the bumper, but this took some cutting and fabricating of stuff. tank wise just look around at the junk yard. and like i said they have replacement tanks at autozone and advance auto.

Whats the shape of the TB inlet on the 3.4s? on the 3.1 its kinda ovaled like on an LT1 or something. I should be able to shoe horn a 3" coupler around it. I guess the only thing I gotta wait on getting is the K&N, everything else seems pretty cheap. The only thing I think I might try is using 3" exhaust pipe. Might take a little more work, and might conduct more heat than PVC, but I got some spare piping from my 383 project I might try out.
