Smile Floating Fuel Gage

Good morning,

I've a 2000 Monte Carlo with 3400 engine (97000 miles +). My fuel gage is floating badly. Most of the time, it shows a full tank. I really don't know it's low on fuel until the "low fuel" light comes on in the message center. Has anyone had this problem out of your Monte? If so, how did you resolve it? My prior research indicated that it could be a faulty sending unit? If so, are these difficult to install? Does the sending unit and fuel pump has to be replaced at the same time or can the sending unit be purchased separately? Can the sending unit and pump be accessed via the trunk of the vehilce vs pulling the gas tank?

Thanks to any that reply to this message!

Could be a faulty sending unit, poor electrical connection (either at the sending unit or at the instrument cluster), or the gauge going bad.

I haven't had this happen my Monte yet, but have with two older cars. Ended up being faulty sending units.

If you know someone with a tech2 you can have them use it to do a gauge sweep test which will test the gauges.
Im thinking its probably the gauge because if the low fuel light is coming on when the fuel is actually low then thats tells me the sender is working and the the bcm is actually reading the fuel level, but the gauge just doesnt work to show the correct level.
