Oil Change Time

Hi Gang well Ive had my Monte for a couple of months now and its time to change the oil. The car has just under 200,000 kilometers 189 or so . What should I be replacing the oil with 5-30 w ? or should I put a little heavier oil in it ? It seems from everything Ive read everyone says Make sure you change your oil every 3000 K to make your engine last. Its not leaking and not burning any oil. So what do you think ? Herman

I always go with the full synthetic oil now, and the best filters Wix or Baldwin I just tried that new K&N oil filter plus I try and get a deeper one as well. :)

I use regular 5w30 in my 3800 and change it around 5000 miles with a Wix 51036 or whatever crosses over to it in the store brand.

Thats good guys ,but how many miles do you have on your engines ? Changing to synthetic on an old engine mess things up on an old engine ( seals and the like ) I was under the impression that you should only use the synthetic when the engine was new like after the initial break-in period not after the engine has over a 100,000 Miles. Any way the reason I was asking about a thicker viscosity is because of the high millage engines loose a lot of their tolerances. I think Ill just stay with regular oil. Herman

as long as you don't have any oil leaks you can use synthetic oil.....if you have leaks tho they will get worse. only because it tends to be a lil thinner than regular oil. depends on what climate you live in, if you have very cold winters where it gets below zero.. id go with 5-30....

I run 5w30 in both my 2006 Monte (94k miles) and my 2013 Malibu (18k miles) because that's what's recommended. I run Mobil 1 full synthetic and ACDelco filters for both. The Monte doesn't see enough miles during a year so I just change it once a year, usually at the end of the season before storage. I try to stick to 5k mile intervals on the Malibu.

I use 5w30 and change every 3,000 miles. Engine has just over 77K miles on it, and at 75K I switched from conventional oil to Kendall synthetic blend. I also use Zmax products on everything...

Thank-You for the replies. Ill stick with the 5-30 W . Herman

That synthetic thing is pretty much an older issue when synthetics were first being developed. You are perfectly fine switching over to a synthetic whenever you want. Modern synthetics are an amazing thing.

I run Mobil 1 5w-30 and Wix oil filters, in every car in my driveway. Have over 200,000 miles on my supercharged Monte.

For the haters out there - Jiffy Lube every 5,000 miles. I forget what brand Castrol or Penzz but it was a "high mileage" 5W-30 oil.

Had 250,000 miles on it when she was taken away by a collision.

I'm back to DIY now 'cause I don't need to put car on ramps and the oil filter is right in front under the hood on the replacement car.
