Lock ring on fuel pump

I've a 2000 monte Carlo (LS) with 3.4 or 3400 engine with
108k miles. I'm having problem with adjusting the dang lock ring that holld down the fuel pumP. Does this ring suppose to be flush with the top of the tank surface? Mine seem to be sitting too high to lock it down. It seems like the fuel pump is down far enough in the tank but I can't seem to get it to go down any further in the tank. Any ideas why? Today I had a fuel line come lose from the fuel pump. Lost lot of fuel:)). A good Samaritan stopped me and told me that I was losing gas. Pulled cover off of fuel pump and found fuel line disconnected. Could this be due to fuel pump not being properly mounted/secured? Advance auto suggest that I rupldce the little clip that fuel line connectts to because it seem to be worn. I would appreciate any help anyone could provide about how to lock the ring around fuel pump. I would be very relieved if i can find out how to lock down the fuel pump I have it lined up with the tabs on the tank but it is very loose Does anyone know of any websites that have online videos of how to install the lock ring on fuel pump? Sorry for the long message! Thanks in advance!
