you didnt say if your car had a v8 or not, but ill go on the assumption that it does. if its the original motor itll be a 267 or 305. neither will make 400hp cheaply or reliably. your best bet would be go crate motor, unless you can get a 327 or larger small block for next to free and have someone with experience to help you build it. if you have a friend to help then any of the larger small block chevys will make 400hp with a decent set of heads and a cam. the next problem once you make that power will be putting it to the ground. the gbodies dont hook for **** with out some suspension tuning. your also going to want a tranny rebuild with a shift kit and a convertor that matches the cam. then youll want a rear, either build yours with a 28spline carrier and axles, get a 8.5 from a gn or a 442, or get a custom 9"/12bolt/dana60. hp is only part of the equation, a good street car is the whole package, a working combination. also dont get to hung up on this 400hp number, in this day and age of 400+hp factory cars its no longer impressive(ask me how i know). not to mention a 3rd gen at 330hp thats set up right will go well into the 13s no problem. not trying to discourage you, just being realistic. mines been an on and off project for 15yrs and its still not where i want it to be. anyways everyone loves a good 3rd gen so post pics of your car.

you could also look into building a turbo 6 for it. i dont really know anything about that kind of thing though. your best bet if you wanted to go that route is to check out a grand national forum and see what they say. i dont know if the blocks are specific for grand nationals or not. ill go out on a limb and say it probably wasnt, but may have had different pistons. ill assume they had special heads, and the sequential fuel injection as well. im sure theres a budget way to build a similar motor without actually owning a gn youre just going to have to do a bit of research.
