1978 Chev Monte Carlo 2 Dr Sport Coupe wwith a 305 factory 4 speed. Car was restored 10 years ago and driven very little since. Has been in storage for last 7 years, When restored the engine was freshed up with a cam ,4 barell carb and dual exaust. The car runs and drives great, just a fun car. The vin# was checked by GM and now have the documentation that there were 19,636 Monte Carlo's built but only 74 were 305 4 speeds. Car was built April 7 1978,then shipped to Maurice Carter Chev Olds in Hamilton Ontario.

I think the car needs a little documented information to support it's claim.

I know the '78, 79, 80 Montes could be bought with a factory 3-speed manual trans in them, but a factory installed 4-speed? New one on me. Even if it is 1 of 79 or whatever. Let's see documented proof.

A friend of mine in my local car club had a red 1978 Monte Carlo WITH a FACTORY 4-speed transmission. He has the original build sheet from the car, which I've seen in person. He sold the car years ago and regrets selling it every day. He's constantly on craigslist to find either his old or another 78 factory 4-speed car.

Just came across this thread, but better late then never?

I owned a 1978 Monte Carlo with the 305 V8 and the rare factory 4-speed. It was, indeed, a factory option. (I can't remember the extra cost, but could find the numbers). I bought it almost new in 1978 with 5,478 miles on it. It was blue with the factory T-Top roof, and had been previously driven by the dealership owner's wife. (Viking Chevrolet in Fridley, Minnesota.)

I kept the car for 18 years (the last 8 mostly in storage) before I gave it away. Drove it over 220,000 miles in those years with the original drivetrain still intact and all working. It was always in original stock condition. Never had any problems with it - on a car originally bought by an 18 year-old and all the abuse that entails... (I could get rubber in the first 3 gears if I tried really hard!) Good memories....
