Replace Gear Shift Knob

I finally did it. Here is how.

I replaced the stock shifter knob with an Autotecnica APA 100-510 (Carbon fiber like with leather)

Tools
* 2 pairs of needle nose plyers (one is ok if you have a pair of rounded nose plyers see below)

* 1 pair of rounded tipped need nose plyers (if you do not have two pair of needle nose plyers)

* an extra set of hands is helpful but not required

Steps
* Pull down the leather wrapping that is directly below the shifter. This wrapper is called the bottie.

* The knob is attached to the shaft by a 'U' clip the 'bottom' part of the 'U' clip can be seen slight sticking out the front (toward the dash) of the knob
In the rear of the knob, you will see two small slots, this is 'top' of the 'U'. With a pair of need nose plyers squize the sides and press in.

* The 'top' part of the 'U' should start to pop out. With an other pair of needle nose plyers or round tipped needle nose plyers, pull on the 'U', this is where the other set of hands can come in to play. If needed to get more grip, push the 'top' part of the 'U' in a little more.

* When the 'U' is out all the way, pull up on the knob. That is it. I would recommend that you put the clip back in the knob where it came from, so you do not lose it.

Hi Jonny.

Ralph retired from the forum years ago.

I'm pretty sure he was referring to the 6th gens. But I think it may be the same, if not similar, for the 5th and 7th gens too.

Why did I bump the thread? I'm going through the threads in this section and placing them where they properly belong. Plus many How To's were damaged by our server problem in 2008. I'm attempting to repair them or delete them if they can't be salvaged.
