How To - Intermediate Steering Shaft Greasing
 

I seen several posts regarding this issue coming up but didnt come across a clear cut guide so for those that are having this issue have at it with the following. this information was borrowed for the instance the original location was to go down or disappear and slightly edited by me.

Problem: Clunk Noise From Front Of Vehicle During Turning Maneuver/Steering Wheel Rotation


Solution: Lubrication. Do not replace the shaft.

Models: A lot including:

2001-2002 Buick Regal
2000-2002 Cadillac Seville
1997-2002 Chevrolet Cavalier
2000-2002 Chevrolet Impala
2000-2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo
2001-2002 Oldsmobile Aurora
1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue
2000-2002 Pontiac Bonneville
2000-2002 Pontiac Sunfire

Parts Needed

Steering Column Shaft Lubrication Kit, P/N 26098237 or grease of your choice and similar injections method. You need this for the cork but after the first time you simply need 25 cents worth of lube.
First aid kit
Gloves (it's a messy job)
Jack and one jack stand
A luxurious creeper is nice
11 mm socket
socket wrench and long extension
torque wrench
1.5 hours or less

Procedure

Take First Aid Tape And Wrap Your Knuckles So We Dont Bleed All Over Our Ride, And Then Cover Your Hands In Gloves To Help Keep Them Clean.

Second Thing To Do Is Remove The Cover Under The Steering Wheel

Third Your Going To Want To Pull Back The Seal On The Shaft, Once Pulled Back MAKE SURE YOUR STEERING WHEEL IS STRAIGHT, If It Is Then Continue On Removing The 11 MM Bolt, Once Removed The Wheel Will Move Freely, So Make Sure You Dont Move It As You Can Break Or Damage Wiring In The Wheel.

Fourth Your Going To Need To Jack Up The Drivers Side, Set The Car On A Jack Stand, And Remove The Tire, You Cant Get To The Part Without Doing This, Once All That Is Done Your Going To Slide Under The Car Looking At These Places.

You Will Need A Long Extension To Get To The Bolt Down There, Once The Bolt Is Removed You Will Want To Go Back Inside The Car And Pull The Shaft Out, If Its Stuck, Take A Screwdriver And A Hammer And Carefully Tap At The Pinch Bolt Freeing It Up.

Fifth You Will Want To Full Extend The Shaft And Inject Grease Into It

Sixth You Will Want To Insert The Cork

Seventh You Will Want To Collapse The Shaft 15-20 Times Making Sure To Put The Pressure On The Yolk And Not The Bearings.

Eighth You Will Need To Remove The Cork And Reverse Steps To Put The Shaft Back Into The Car, You May Need To Turn The Wheel Very Slightly To Get The Shaft Back Onto Its Original Mounting Location. Torque The Bolts To 35 Ft Lbs.
