3800 Starter Replacemnet How To (With pics)

This should be a general guide to 5th and 6th Gen 3800 starter replacement

Yours may be slightly different this was done on my 2001 MC SS Pace Car

Mine went out this weekend and thought i'd do a write up while i was replacing it. doing this, taking pics ect took me just under 45 min

Any beginer should be able to do this in about an hr,

Depending on skill level i would say this could take anywhere from 30 min to and hour start to finish

Tools needed:

Jack,
Jack stands.
or a set of wheel ramps,
3/8in Ratchet
various exstentions
8mm Socket
10mm Socket
12mm Socket
13mm Socket
15mm Socket

Step1: Jack Up your car and Put onto Jack stands or drive onto wheel ramps

Step2: Grab you 8mm and disconect battery
(i'm weird and unhook both pos and neg that way no way of having isssues)

http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q...n/IMAG0974.jpg
(i actually used a 1/4in ratchet with a 8mm)

Step3: grab your 10mm and Pull off air Deflector and se it aside

(5 bolts)

Step4: Grab your 10mm again and pull off plastic flywheel inspection cover
(3 bolts 2 on the botom one towards the front)

This is the one that faces the front, i used the space between the radiator and subframe to pull it out with a deepwall 10mm and extention

http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q...n/IMAG0984.jpg

Step 6: Grab your 15mm and extention to unbolt starter
(2bolts)(i like to use a swivel extention on the front bolt that way the socket makes better contact with the bolt as the subfram is just a hair in the way)
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q...n/IMAG0985.jpg
i did not get a pic of this but i put stars over there the bots are in a pic

Step6: now that the starter is loose i like to tip it to be able to get to the conections small one was 8mm and big one was 13mm on the old 12mm on the new
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q...n/IMAG0980.jpg
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q...n/IMAG0989.jpg

Step7: pull it out and compair to new part, you never know parts stores can mess up too! i always like to comapair the old to new and inspect the new part befor putting it in,

To install you just follow these instructions in revere order

in the end you should have your new starter in and ready to go@
